Testing IDC (110) Block Connections with DSX CableAnalyzer

There may be a time where you need to test an installed link which includes an IDC (110) block connection on one (or both ends) of the link.  Consider using a hybrid patch cord and running a Channel test instead of a Permanent Link test with a Permanent Link adapter. Please consult the manufacturer of the IDC block to determine if they will warrant a Channel test, or for guidance on a different test procedure.  

One possible scenario is to use a hybrid patch cable (RJ45 on one end, IDC connection on the other end), and certify the link using a Channel test.  In that configuration you would attach the hybrid patch cable to the channel adapter on Versiv and connect to the IDC block.  On the far end of the link use an RJ45 to RJ45 patch cable to connect to the channel adapter on the Versiv Remote.  You will need to make sure that the wire scheme is correct on the hybrid patch cable.  The IDC block may be wired for T568A or T568B, and the hybrid patch cord must use the same wire scheme.  Set up Versiv to run a Channel test.  If each end of the link is terminated with an IDC block, use two hybrid patch cords to connect to it and test.  The image shown below is for example only.

DSX M12D and M12X adapters

DSX M12 channel adapters are available for M12D (4 position) and M12X (8 position) connectors for use with the DSX CableAnalyzer Series. These adapters allow you to test and certify or validate installed cabling links to ensure reliable transmission.  The M12 series of connectors can be more suited to the demanding physical environment of industrial installations.

The M12 adapters can be used for both channel and patch cord tests. When used for channel testing, the mated NEXT of the Plug and Jack at the adapter is not included in the measurement. For Patch Cord tests, the mated NEXT of the Plug and Jack at the adapter is included.

Coaxial Impedance Error "Cable Too Short"

Coaxial testing with the DSX CableAnalyzer using the DSX-COAX modules includes the following autotest measurements:

  • Length
  • Resistance (remote or terminator required)
  • Impedance
  • Insertion Loss
  • Propagation delay
  • HDTDR Analyzer

When testing Impedance, the minimum cable length for an impedance measurement is 13ft / 4m.  The impedance measurement shows the approximate characteristic impedance of the cable at a point approximately 13 ft (4 m) from the tester.

Testing coaxial cable lengths shorter than 13ft/4m the test results will show “Cable Too Short” in the test reports.

 

On the Versiv tester, the same result will show "i" (information only) for the impedance and overall test results.  Good cabling has relatively constant characteristic impedance throughout the cable and connectors. Changes in impedance cause signal reflections in cabling. In computer networks, signal reflections can cause network faults. In video systems, reflections can cause poor picture quality.

Registering your DSX CableAnalyzer

The first step in registering the DSX CableAnalyzer (Versiv) is obtaining the latest version of LinkWare PC Cable Test Management Software. You can click here to get it. The latest version is 10.4 and we recommend you load the standalone installer version.. Downloading LinkWare PC will require a free MyAccount login. If you do not have one, you will be prompted to create one when you click on the download.

1. Once LinkWare PC 10.4 is installed, you will need to verify the firmware version on your Versiv (TFS) main and remote unit.

2. From the HOME screen, tap TOOLS Version Information. It should show Version 6.4 Build 4.

3. If it is not the current firmware, click here to learn how to update your Versiv (TFS).

4. If you have never connected the main and remote units together, go ahead and do that now ensuring the remote unit is switched on,

Now the main unit will know about (store) your remote unit and module(s) serial numbers.

IMPORTANT:
If you have CertiFiber Pro/OptiFiber Pro modules, insert them one at a time into the main unit so that these modules are also recorded.

5. Connect the Versiv (TFS) to your PC via the supplied micro USB cable. (If this is the first time, allow the USB driver to install)

6. With LinkWare PC 10.4 open, wait a few seconds for the Product Registration window to appear:

If it does not appear, click on Help Product registration.

7. Click Sign in and Register and use your email address and password login. (The same information you used to download LinkWare, your MyAccount user name and password)

8. Once signed in, LinkWare should automatically register the connected products. If you bought the Bundled Gold Support, there should be a fourth colum stating your gold support is in process. At this point you can remove the Permanent Link Adapter and Channel adapter.

Other modules

If you have other modules that have been used with this main frame already, those serial numbers have already been logged into the internal memory of the main frame and will appear in the registration window above. The Versiv (TFS) main frame tracks internally any modules or remotes it is connected to.

What if I get an error “Registration Service is Unavailable” and registration does not work?

Your corporate firewalls may be blocking the communication path from your PC to our registration server. 

Check with your IT group and ask them to make exceptions for the ports and servers below.  After that is done, try the registration again.

Know How to Determine Your Versiv Module Calibration Due Date

Only the measurement modules (DSX-5000, DSX-8000, CertiFiber Pro, OptiFiber Pro) used with Versiv and Versiv2 CableAnalyzer are eligible for recommended annual factory calibration at the Service Center.  The Versiv and Versiv2 Main and Remote units do not require factory calibration. 

As long as you are keeping the Versiv Main and Versiv Remote updated with the latest software version, and there are no hardware issues with them, they do not need to be sent to the Service Center annually.  There is also no annual calibration available or needed for any of the accessory adapters (Permanent Link and Channel, DSX-COAX, DSX-PCxx patch cord adapters) or FI-1000 Fiber Inspection camera.

How do I find my calibration due date? 

  • You can connect any of the modules to the Versiv mainframe and check Version Information interrogate the module.  The module is considered due for factory calibration one year beyond the stated Calibration Date or Calibration Start Date.

Notes:

It is normal for the Software and Hardware versions on the MODULE @ MAIN screen NOT to match the Software and Hardware versions on the MAIN TESTER screen, even after a software update.  As long as you are updating the Versiv Main and Versiv Remote when a new update is available, any measurement modules will be updated automatically when they are connected to the test set.  The example above does not indicate that the DSX-5000 module needs an update.

If the Versiv Remote is connected with Permanent link adapter and Channel adapter (copper set refence connections), this method can also be used to interrogate the module on the Remote. 

In the case of CertiFiber Pro modules, you can use this method to interrogate the Remote module when you connect Versiv Main and Remote over fiber test reference cord set reference connections.

In the MODULE screens below, the Versiv Main was running version 6.1 Build 3.  Calibration on these modules is considered due one year beyond the stated Calibration Date.

 

CFP-QUAD and OFP-QUAD Examples:

LinkWare PC

During the import process via USB cable to download results from the tester, LinkWare PC gives a warning 60 days and 45 days before the calibration expires. Thirty days before expiration, a pop-up dialog warning shows each time LinkWare PC imports data from the tester.

To make sure that the modules operate within the published specifications for accuracy, we recommend customers have them calibrated at a Fluke Networks authorized Service Center every 12 months.

If the Versiv module was used for the first time within 6 months after it was calibrated during manufacturing, Calibration Start Date is displayed below Calibration Date. This is the date the module was first used. This is typical for new modules which have never been set to the Service Center for factory calibration.

If the first use was more than 6 months after calibration, the Calibration Start Date is the date the module was calibrated, plus 6 months. For example, if the module was manufactured and calibrated on February 1st, 2018, but not used to run an autotest until October 1st, 2018, the Calibration Start Date is August 1st, 2018.  Calibration would be considered due by August 1st, 2019 for this module.

The module's calibration expires 12 months after the Calibration Date or the Calibration Start Date.

 

LinkWare Live

LinkWare Live provides periodic updates via email notifications to Organization Owner, Manager, and Admin Roles.  The Asset Tracking feature can also be used to determine calibration status of modules used in test results that are SYNCed to Projects and Subprojects in the users’ LinkWare Live Organizations.  

One caveat to relying on LinkWare Live for module calibration status is that LinkWare Live will only track serial numbers which were included in results that were SYNCed to your LinkWare Live Organization.

  • Notifications and and Asset Status warns when the calibration status is overdue.
  • If the date is within 60 of the recommended one year calibration interval, a warning "Nearing recommended calibration date of XX/XX/XXXX" will be displayed next to the serial number of the asset.

Gold Support Calibration Requests

One annual “Factory Calibration Without Data” by Fluke Service Center is provided free of charge for modules covered by a Gold Support contract.  The Service Center will provide a hardcopy calibration certificate with the equipment in the return shipment of the customer owned modules.   Contact Fluke Networks Technical Assistance Center to make a calibration claim under a Gold contract, and be prepared to provide your Gold number and serial numbers.  Some customers prefer to keep the kit together and also send the Versiv Main and Versiv Remote.  If you wish to do that, please provide also provide those serial numbers and specify whether they are Versiv or Versiv2 Main and Remote units.

Note:

If you require "Calibration With Data,"  or, the “As Found” and “As Left” data points on the calibration certificate, you can request to be quoted the price difference from the Service Center between an RMA for “Calibration Without Data” and “Calibration With Data.”  The Service Center will require a payment option (credit card or PO) to create the RMA. 

There are two calibration request types available under Gold Support:

  • Waybill Only Option (No Loaners):  Typical shipping and turnaround time through the Service Center for a calibration RMA without loaner units is a week and a half to two weeks.
  • Scheduled Calibration with Loaners:  Scheduled calibration requests with Loaner units are typically scheduled 6-8 weeks out from the time the Technical Assistance Center receives the request.

 

 

Calibration - DSX CableAnalyzer

Fluke Networks recommends that the DSX CableAnalyzer (DSX-8000 or DSX-5000) modules are to  be factory calibrated by an authorized service center every 12 months.

Since the Versiv mainframe and remote unit are not measurement devices, they do not require any factory calibration, and therefore no Certificate(s) of Calibration are required for them.  

Note: The following is applicable to all DSX-8000 CableAnalyzer, DSX-5000 CableAnalyzer, CertiFiber Pro, and OptiFiber Pro modules manufactured after June 20th, 2016.

When you receive your new and unused DSX CableAnalyzer module(s), you can check the module's calibration status by tapping on TOOLS Version Information > MODULE:

When you run a test for the first time with the DSX CableAnalyzer module, a second calibration date will appear:

In the example above, the calibration certificate supplied with the module will have shown 06/04/2016. However, re-calibration will not be due until 06/28/2017, since the first test was carried out on 06/28/2016. Your calibration certificate states the calibration date starts with the first test you conduct or six months after the module was calibrated, at the factory here in Everett, WA.

What about the test report? The Calibration Start Date is the date that will be stored with your test record and reported in LinkWare PC:

Only an authorized service center can adjust the module and update the calibration date.

The Versiv platform incorporates volatile and non volatile memory. Volatile memory is memory whose contents are lost when power is removed.  Non-volatile memory is memory whose contents are retained when power is removed. Modular Plug Terminated Link (MPTL) Test Limits for DSX-5000 and DSX-8000

Within the ANSI-TIA568.2-D standard is a new link model named Modular Plug Terminated Link. Previously, the TIA-568-C.2 required that horizontal cable be terminated on a telecommunications outlet to provide flexible access to the user, however in certain limited cases there may be a need to terminate horizontal cables with a plug that is directly plugged into a device.

For most installations, either testing using the Permanent Link model to test from patch panel to faceplate, or to test the whole Channel is the correct approach. But in those cases where you are installing a far end device, such as an access point or a camera, where it is impractical to install a faceplate, this link model is an option.

The MPTL limits contemplate the use of a Permanent Link adapter, DSX-PLA004 or DSX-PLA804 on one end and a Patch Cord adapter, DSX-PC6ADSX-PC6or DSX-PC5e on the other end. These links are tested against the TIA Permanent Link limits.  The bolded model names are the orderable part numbers for the single patch cord adapters; make sure you order the correct adapter for the jacks and cabling you are using (they are not "backwards compatible for the test limit selection).

The use of a patch cord adapter on the far end that corresponds to the category of cable being tested helps to verify the performance of the field installed plug. If we were to use a channel adapter, per the standard, we would not include the mated NEXT of the plug and jack in the measurement.

This configuration shows how to set up for a TIA Cat 6A MPTL (+PoE) autotest using DSX-5000 and DSX-PLA004 permanent link adapter and DSX-PC6A patch cord adapter.  Selecting the (+PoE) limit adds Resistance Unbalance and Pair to Pair Resistance Unbalance measurements to the test.  It ensures that your cable is properly balanced, which is important for PoE environments.  For more information, click here.

To configure the tester to run this test, from the Test Setup screen, tap the “Test Limit” field, and then MORE:

Next we will choose the TIA Limit Group, choose the desired category of cable, and select the desired MPTL limit:

Note:  If you do not see MPTL (+PoE) limits available, update your software on Versiv to the latest version (6.1 included these limits).

After you tap the desired test limit, tap SAVE, select your limit, and tap USE SELECTED to finalize your selection.

Ready to test:  you should see your test limit in the test limit box on the HOME screen.

Remember, the standards suggest running two Category 6A links to access points for new installations.

Marginal * bands for the DSX CableAnalyzer

The DSX CableAnalyzer has been independently verified to Level IIe, III, IIIe, IV and draft V accuracy in accordance with ANSI/TIA-1152 and IEC 61935-1 Ed.4. If the measurement falls within the nominal accuracy of the test equipment, the measurement must be marked with an asterisk (*). You cannot disable the asterisk in the DSX-5000 or DSX-8000 CableAnalyzer; that would be a violation of the standard.
 
A requirement of these standards is for the test equipment vendor to state their accuracy against the given test limit for all parameters, also known as the marginal bands. The links below provide the specific nominal accuracy values at each frequency measurement point for the DSX-5000 and DSX-8000 CableAnalyzer.
