With the recent Wi-Fi explosion and the ever-growing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) phenomenon, IT groups within organizations face the constant challenge of flooded network resources by “foreign devices”(smartphones, tablets, phablets, e-readers, etc.). IT staff members must find the delicate balance between meeting the needs of the users with the best practices defined by the organization’s policies for Wi-Fi security and performance. User expectations of seamless mobility and superior performance on their own devices are not what IT staff signed up for.
Adding to the misery is the unique radio characteristics of mobile devices (low transmit power, number of antennas, etc.). It’s challenging to make the best Wi-Fi Access Point deployment decisions to serve these devices as compared to traditional laptop/desktop. There is a disconnect between user expectations of seeing full bars for a Wi-Fi signal and their actual experience. The only way of representing the true end-user experience is mapping the Wi-Fi throughput for the connection. It becomes critical for the IT staff to deploy the network efficiently the first time to handle this avalanche of devices and traffic to avoid time and resource-consuming, costly network redesigns.
The AirMapper app is the most accurate and complete heat map, Wi-Fi network design and deployment solution available on the Android platform. This app assists IT staff members deploy the best performing Wi-Fi network for end users. Users can map the RF signal coverage and visualize the Wi-Fi throughput of the connection at every location on the floor. Users walk the floor with their smart device and perform quick site surveys for perspective on device performance in the environment. The results help the user design or redesign the Wi-Fi network by taking into account the real-world experience. The AirMapper app fully integrates with AirMagnet Survey PRO for advanced analysis and reporting.
AirMapper is available in two editions:
Refer to the comparison table between the two editions for more details.
Users can now walk around with a lightweight Android-based phone, tablet or phablet to conduct Wi-Fi site surveys faster. Support for smart devices allows users to replicate the “true” user experience of the smart device as they design the Wi-Fi network. Users have the ability to design the networks for 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz networks (band capability is dependent on the phone/tablet)
Users have the ability to monitor RF signal strength from the Wi-Fi Access Points (AP) at every location on the floor. Users can choose to view coverage from all of the Access Points or can filter to a certain SSID, channel or AP.
The unique radio characteristics of the smart devices (low transmit power, number of antennas, etc.) make it challenging to make the best Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) deployment decisions to serve these new devices, as compared to the traditional laptop/notebook type of computing devices. There is a complete disconnect between the user expectation of seeing “full bars” for Wi-Fi signal strength on the smart device and their actual experience. In this case, the only way of truly representing the end-user experience on the device is to map the “Wi-Fi throughput” for the connection. Users are able to map the Wi-Fi throughput (downlink) at every location on the floor.
Users have the ability of getting detailed information on the Access Points operating in the environment along with their properties (MAC address, channel, signal strength and security setting)
Users can locate the position of the Access Points on the floor map after conducting the Wi-Fi site survey.
The built-in tutorial capability guides new users on a quick journey through the app
The AirMapper app is part of the industry-winning Wi-Fi planning/designing/deployment suite of products and fully integrates with AirMagnet Survey PRO for advanced analysis and reporting. Some of the quick ways of getting the survey project file into AirMagnet Survey PRO is via email, Gmail, Evernote®, Dropbox™, Bluetooth, etc.
Users have the ability to add annotations at any location on the floor during the site survey. They can add text, photos, videos and audio notes directly to the building floor plans.

Q: Are software upgrades supported? If so, do I need to perform uninstall and reinstall whenever a new build comes out?
A: Upgrades are supported and no uninstall is required. You can simply choose to install the new APK.
Q: The AirMapper start screen on my device does not play the start screen animation. Why not?
A: Some devices with limited runtime memory may not play the animation. However, this has no impact on the usability of the AirMapper app.
Q: Can I run AirMapper on OPhone China-based devices?
A: AirMapper has not been tested on these platforms.
Q: What is the preferred Android tool for locating and loading a floor plan?
A: The built-in Android Gallery tool gives the best performance and consistent support across different platforms and Android releases.
Q: I see that AirMapper creates the project name for my project. Can I specify my own project name?
A: Yes. AirMapper creates a default project name during project creation. Feel free to change the default text.
Q: I have a 10-megapixel floor plan. Can I load it in AirMapper?
A: We recommend a floor plan that is 6.25 megapixels (2500x2500px) or smaller. You can use an image editing application to reduce the size of the floor plan.
Q: Can I select all APs in “My SSID”?
A: The default is all APs; however, you may also manually check up to all APs.
Q: Sometimes calibration measuring points seem to be stuck. What can I do?
A: Try rotating the device from landscape to portrait or vice versa and calibrate again.
Q: While loading a floor plan, I get a message like “Unable to load. Please choose another floor plan. Error code=1”. What is the problem?
A: The amount of memory assigned to an application such as AirMapper is limited and controlled by the Android system. In addition, depending on the file explorer that you use, other errors may occur. All such errors are not within AirMapper’s control. The codes attempt to provide more detail about the errors.
Here is a list of some of the codes associated with loading a floor plan:
Code=1: Third party file explorer is not providing the correctly file path/name.
Code=2: File path/name is incorrect.
Code=3: Error attempting to create project folder or failure in attempting to load image due to size, type, or name is invalid.
Consider reducing the file size of the image, for example, by converting a JPEG to GIF or by reducing the pixel-per-inch resolution.
Performing a survey:
Q: Can I perform a throughput test and passive signal coverage survey simultaneously?
A: No. The performance and accuracy of throughput and passive surveys have been improved since the first release by separating them into two distinct surveys.
Q: Can I use AirMapper while my Android device is connected to another computer via USB as an external storage device?
A: It depends. If your device has an SD card (newer devices), AirMapper stores all data there, including the license that allows AirMapper to run. Connecting to another computer via USB as an external storage device effectively removes access to SD memory from AirMapper and it will not run. Disconnecting the USB connection restores all functionality. Using a USB connection for recharging only purposes is okay.
Q: Sometimes when I press/touch a point on the screen I don’t get any action or response.
A: Make sure you do not press too forcefully and that you do not tap using your fingernail.
Q: Does the AirMapper app work with the new Jelly Bean OS (Android 4.1)?
Q: Can I use “special”, non-displayable characters for the survey project name?
A: No. Use only alpha-numeric characters and the following marks:
Q: AirMapper app survey gives me an indication of signal strength, but that is only one factor in WLAN design. What about the other factors like channel interference and overlapping coverage?
A: You can export an AirMapper project and open it in AirMagnet Survey PRO for detailed analysis.
Q: After conducting an AirMapper Survey, if I click a data point on the survey it displays “Top 5 APs”. How can I easily determine all the APs captured at that data point?
A: You can export an AirMapper project and open it in AirMagnet Survey PRO for detailed analysis.
Q: I know the throughput test address I typed (URL) is correct, however, the test fails. Why?
A: The URL is case sensitive. Be sure the throughput test URL contains the correct upper and lower case letters for the address. If you are not sure, try using all lower case.
Q: What SSID does the throughput test use?
A: It’s the SSID that your device is using to connect to Wi-Fi.
Q: I have several different SSIDs that I connect to on my Android device. When I run the throughput test, how do I know which SSID is the one running the test?
A: The throughput test relies on the user's Wi-Fi setting for the device. To ensure that your throughput test is consistent and focuses on a single SSID for the test, you should remove (forget) all the other SSIDs in your device’s Wi-Fi settings.
Q: What is the format of the URL used for the throughput test?
A: It is recommended that you type an http path that ends in a downloadable file of minimum 5MB in size. For example: http://mywebserver/throughputfile.mp4.
Q: During a survey, does signal strength update instantaneously?
A: AirMapper is performing a real time survey. However, the update speed depends on the particular device running AirMapper app. Generally, there may be a slight delay in how quickly and frequently a device updates AP information. This delay may be a few seconds depending on the device.
Q: During a survey, what information is being displayed at the lower left corner that shows an AP graphic with a number to its right?
A: The number indicates the number of AP's detected at the time of the click. You may click the icon to display a list of APs currently detected.
Q: Does AirMapper report all the APs in my environment?
A: There are some cases where Android does not report AP information:
Q: I see “NaN” label displayed below the progress bar. What is it?
A: It’s a diagnostic message. You can ignore it.
Q: I want to run the Throughput test at a hotspot-type location where I may first get redirected to a “terms agreement” page while associating to an AP. Can I do that?
A: Try first associating to the AP using a browser. Once you have accepted the terms-agreement and are successfully associated to the AP, you can switch to AirMapper and run the Throughput test.
Q: What does a Throughput test popup message mean? For example, Failed to download file from HTTP server (error code = 01).
A: You may run into errors while running the Throughput test. This may range from not being able to connect to the server to not finding the requested file. Unfortunately, sometimes the HTTP error that is returned to AirMapper may not be very specific. We have attempted to group them into the following numbered codes:
Here are a few things to do to try to resolve the problems:
Q: Can I use the filter feature in Throughput view?
A: Currently, there is no filter feature available in the Throughput view.
Q: How do I share my AirMapper projects?
A: With a project open, click Export. It will open the list of export options like built-in email, Gmail™, Dropbox™, Evernote™ and Bluetooth™.
Q: Which version of AirMagnet Survey PRO is officially supported to view the AirMapper survey data?
A: To properly view the AirMapper survey data in AirMagnet Survey PRO, you need to install Survey PRO 8.2 build 25974 or later.
Q: When I view an AirMapper project in AirMagnet Survey PRO, why can I not view the media type (e.g., 802.11a vs. 802.11a/n) information?
A: The current versions of Android do not provide this information. However, AirMagnet Survey PRO will display 2.4 GHz as 802.11g and 5 GHz as 802.11a.
Q: Why can I not view noise or SNR information in my AirMapper project or when I open the project in AirMagnet Survey Pro?
A: The current versions of Android do not provide this information.
Q: I know Gmail, etc., are already protected by HTTPS protocol; however, I like to have additional encryption security applied to my project when sharing. How do I do that?
A: You can export your AirMapper project and then encrypt the zip file using whatever standard tool you normally use for this purpose. Here’s what you can do to retrieve the ZIP file before sharing it:
- Open your AirMapper project.
- Select “Export” (Share), but do not select any of the export options shown.
- Using an external file browser, go to the following folder: sdcard/AirMapper and retrieve the zip file.
- You can now apply additional encryption to the retrieved zip using your preferred tool.
Q: Can I tweet about AirMapper via the AirMapper app?
A: Yes, you can click the Twitter social media button displayed on the project screen. If, for some reason, you are not able to use the Twitter option from within the AirMapper app, you can switch to a browser and log directly into Twitter, then click “follow” on our AirMapper page.
Q: I love your product. How do I tell the world about it?
A: You can post comments using the social media connections provided and post to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and our own AirWise Community Blog.
Q: Can I open AirMapper exported projects using Survey PRO 8.2 (Build 25974)?
A: Yes. When opening the latest AirMapper release (1.5.1) in Survey PRO 8.2 Build 25974, you will need to do the following. Note that these steps need to be un-do when opening the latest AirMapper release (1.5.1) on a later build after Survey PRO 8.2 build 25974.
Q: Can I continue to use AirMapper when the SD card memory is running low?
A: In general, applications have no control over system-related conditions. In this case, applications may behave in an unpredictable way. AirMapper checks for available SD card memory during launch and may warn the user if there may not be enough memory to successfully perform a survey.
Q: Can I view AirMapper in portrait and landscape modes on my device running Android version 2.2?
A: Rotation (viewing in different orientation) is not supported for 2.2 or older devices. For such a device, disable the auto-rotation setting or set the orientation to” locked” in portrait mode on the device.
