EMA Impact Brief - Taking End-to-End AANPM to a New Level (English Only)
When describing the scope of network and application performance management solution, technology providers love to use the term “end-to-end” to denote the completeness of their offerings. But as with all things, definitions will vary, particularly when it comes to the depth and completeness of information provided. Fluke Networks, in April 2014, announced an innovative new and rich definition for endto- end as it applies to Application-Aware Network Performance Management (AANPM).

Healthcare IT Success Story

A Q&A with Roger Estelle, Network Manager at Hawaii Health Systems

Challenge:
At Hawaii Health Systems we offer medical services at 13 locations spread throughout the Hawaiian Islands. To better meet the needs of our patients and new healthcare regulations, we transitioned to a new electronic health records (EHR) system. This system now connects more than 4,500 employees via wired and wireless networks, and processes patient data back to a hosting location in New Jersey.

Because of the importance of this system to the providers, and the fact that it relies on a high performance network, we can’t afford to have problems linger. We needed a tool that could instantly troubleshoot both wired and wireless network performance problems and help us isolate root cause fast.

Results:
Before getting the OptiView XG®, we use to rely on end point devices, such as a laptop to run ping tests for wireless issues. But then we had nothing to verify coverage or end-to-end connectivity. For the WAN, we actually had to go to individual switches to look at ports and see if we could isolate errors that way.

In other words, it was incredibly time intensive and very manual. And for an organization spread across multiple islands, the term “truck roll” takes on an entirely new meaning. Given that we had already deployed a new records system and upgraded the network, we knew we needed to upgrade our tools as well.

Everett Clinic Case Study

The Everett Clinic Relies on Visual TruView to Ensure Efficient Healthcare Operations and Quality Patient Care

Challenge:
With eight locations and 25 buildings spread throughout the state of Washington, The Everett Clinic’s mission is to provide the best-coordinated patient care – from the trusted family doctor to the skilled surgeon. To do this across multiple communities, the clinic relies on a variety of critical network applications, including the Epic healthcare software suite that helps The Everett Clinic manage clinical (health care records) and revenue information. The performance of these applications is of great importance, and doctors must be able to access the information they need, when they need it; making sure patients get the level of care they’ve come to expect from the clinic. When a problem does arise, the IT team must be able to quickly identify the source of the problem and fix it before it affects the quality of care or health outcomes.

Results:
The Everett Clinic selected Visual TruView to gain instant and complete visibility into application performance for Epic and other critical applications. To visualize performance data, the clinic installed large-screen monitors throughout the clinic to give managers a better real-time view of all patient care applications at a quick glance. If a problem does emerge, TruView instantly notifies the IT team and helps isolate the source of the problem – either the network or specific application – so they can quickly fix it before it affects doctors, patients or staff. The detailed information provided by TruView enables the application team to quickly share network or application performance information with other IT teams (such as architecture, desktop, or business intelligence) when solving problems, working on projects or upgrading systems. If further testing is needed, the IT team uses the OptiView XG to perform in-depth, end-to-end site performance testing to augment the testing already done with Visual TruView.

Bio-Reference Case Study

Bio-Reference Gets Past the Blame Game and Safeguards 35,000 Daily Medical Samples with Visual TruView and OptiView XG

Challenge:
Bio-Reference Laboratories, Inc. provides clinical testing and laboratory services for physician offices with a focus on esoteric testing, molecular diagnostics, anatomical pathology, women’s health, and correctional health care. The company processes more than 35,000 medical specimens each night. To do this effectively, the company relies on a high-performance network that supports various hardware and software applications used in the laboratory sciences. A network delay of just five seconds can have a big impact on processing critical medical tests. And, any network issues or outages can cause serious concerns with test validity, compromising limited medical samples and short turnaround times for immediate diagnosis. Quickly identifying whether a network or application problem exists, and where it exists, is therefore vital to ensuring operational efficiency and testing accuracy at Bio-Reference.

Results:
Bio-Reference deployed Visual TruView from Fluke Networks and immediately saw a dramatic reduction in the amount of time required to identify network or application performance problems. By delivering real-time visibility into the network, staff can quickly respond to trouble tickets and resolve lingering issues. No more finger pointing, just quick problem isolation so teams can mobilize to solve the problem. And, with the addition of OptiView XG Network Analysis Tablet, IT’s network management capabilities are extended into wireless and remote access networks, presenting an ROI greater than the company expected and delivering true end-to-end network and application performance monitoring.

Miami-Dade Library Case Study

The Miami Dade Public Library System Takes Charge of its Network with Visual TruView™ and OptiView® XG

Challenge: The Miami–Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) consists of 49 branch locations and two bookmobiles, along with more than 3.8 million books and 150 databases. The library also provides access to more than 2,000 public computers along with free Internet and Wi–Fi access for all. The network and its more than 3,000 user devices are a big draw for library visitors. Library–owned systems, however, are just the beginning. The network also supports as many as 2,000 Bring–Your–Own–Device (BYOD) devices at a time. With a wide range of users and technical abilities, the team needed to be able to troubleshoot from the user perspective to identify and solve issues.

Results: MDPLS found a solution with the Visual TruView™ from Fluke Networks, teamed with two OptiView® XG Network Analysis Tablets. TruView detects performance anomalies by creating a baseline to compare abnormal traffic patterns against. This helps MDPLS take proactive measures instead of simply reacting to issues. In most cases, MDPLS can resolve issues before they cause noticeable performance impacts for the library's more than 500 staff and millions of annual visitors. When problems do occur, the MDPLS team has the information needed to quickly isolate and solve the problem.

Challenge: Mitel® is a business communications provider with solutions that allow its 60 million customers to connect anywhere, anytime, and on any device through cloud communications, business phones and collaboration software, as well as contact centers. Mitel solutions offer enterprise mobility, unified communications and messaging, and conferencing. Managing multiple communication applications and platforms requires advanced network monitoring and orchestration to ensure optimal network performance. Mitel needed a solid and reliable network testing solution that could provide accurate details in a quick and easy–to–understand format.

Results: Mitel deployed multiple Fluke Networks OptiView® XG Network Analysis Tablets into the field to help conduct end–to–end network testing with a dedicated, compact, and easy–to–use solution. With each OptiView XG tablet pre–configured, Mitel simply ships a unit to any customer site to conduct pre–deployment checks, testing, ongoing monitoring and troubleshooting of VoIP and communication services. The engineer only needs to take it out of the box, turn it on, connect, and start running the tests to quickly identify potential issues on the network. End–to–end testing takes less than 15 minutes, cutting support costs while identifying and documenting the real source of root cause issues.

Borsa Istanbul’s IT network Case Study

Fluke Networks' OptiView® XG pays dividends for Borsa Istanbul’s IT network

Challenge:
Borsa Istanbul A.S. was established at the end of 2012 to bring together the three existing financial exchanges in Istanbul. This required major changes in IT infrastructure and a significant investment in both the network and software. Serving 150-220 brokerage houses, and with up to 1,200 people connecting to its LAN every day, Borsa Istanbul needed a way to ensure its IT systems were handling the increased traffic and network speeds and to quickly identify and fix any problems as they arose.

Results:
Borsa Istanbul uses Fluke Networks’ OptiView XG Network Analysis Tablet on a daily basis to monitor the performance of its network and troubleshoot problems immediately as they arise. The mobile device allows Borsa’s IT professionals to examine problems at their source and measure whether the network is running at the required speed. In addition to enabling the IT team to listen to all the network traffic, the OptiView XG provides intelligent analysis that helps them see beyond the immediate issue to identify the root cause of the problems and implement an effective solution.

Challenge:
Cimarex is a large oil and gas exploration and production company based in Denver, Colorado, with over 1000 employees located across the United States, from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Midland, Texas. Lowndes County Case Study

Optiview XG Network Analysis Tablet Gives Lowndes County, GA the Power to Quickly Diagnose, Repair and Even Design Networks

Challenge:
Lowndes County, Georgia has an IT staff of 7 to support 700 users across multiple agencies (including emergency services) on a mixed wired and wireless network running a number of specialized and industry-specific applications. When problems arise, the team struggles to quickly and proactively remediate network or applications issues before they impact end users. Furthermore, when problems involve third-party vendors, the team must constantly prove the network is not at fault. Using a variety of cumbersome tools, this process can be time consuming and difficult to prove the findings.

Results:
The county selected Fluke Networks’ OptiView® XG Network Analysis Tablet to provide network, application and wireless monitoring and troubleshooting. The tablet dramatically shortens the time Lowndes County’s IT staff needs to identify, diagnose and remediate problems, often finding and resolving issues before they are apparent to end users. In addition, the OptiView XG allows the IT department to better leverage its staff by effectively “up-leveling” the capabilities of its junior technicians to handle issues that would previously require a more experienced technician. By enabling the team to generate detailed reports of network activity at the node or device level, the tablet has also made it easier to rule out network or hardware problems when opening trouble tickets with third-party application vendors.

OptiView XG Network Analysis Tablet Keeps Systems Running to Save Time and Money for City of High Point

Challenge:
The City of High Point, North Carolina, has a broad range of critical IT infrastructure it has to keep up and running at all times, including 24 x 7 emergency services. It also has the typical network challenges facing IT departments today: IPv6 and VoIP rollouts, Wi-Fi upgrades, database migrations, VMware deployments and more. And of course, perennially tight budgets. All of which meant the city’s IT team needed an integrated tool that would allow them to remain nimble, quickly address problems, eliminate travel and guesswork, build a case for system upgrades or changes, and more.

Carrollton Case Study

Fluke Networks’ OptiView® XG Helps Carrollton City Schools Identify and Understand How To Fix Network and Application Issues

Challenge:
Carrollton City Schools had routine network and application issues across its sites, yet lacked the appropriate tools to truly understand and fix the problems. What monitoring software it did have would alert the IT team of trouble, but not identify the specific problem or recommend solutions. As a result, the IT team often spent weeks or months chasing down and solving network and application issues. Complicating matters, the district was in the process of creating a BYOD environment, and the inability to pinpoint issues threatened to lose support from administrators and staff for the new capability.

Results:
The district IT department selected the Fluke Networks OptiView XG to provide the deep insight and analysis needed to quickly identify and solve its network and application performance challenges. The dedicated network analysis tablet not only provides both a complete system overview and detailed information on particular issues, but recommends the changes and solutions necessary to improve performance. In fact the IT group is now eliminating its other monitoring tools, because the OptiView XG does everything they can do, and more.

Kern County in California Uses Fluke Networks’ OptiView XG and Network Time Machine to Troubleshoot and Fix Network and Application Performance Issues

Challenge:
The IT team at Kern County is responsible for providing support services from one central location to all other departments in the county. Like many IT departments, the team often struggles to easily gain insight into network performance and key systems and applications that are vital to county operations. When problems do emerge, the team often hears about them first from end users, and is then forced to use a variety of outdated and complex tools that slow the troubleshooting process to a crawl. With more than 9,000 users the team needed to a) be able to more easily monitor and troubleshoot their VoIP network, and b) have a comprehensive and portable solution that could automate network and application analysis so the team could monitor and troubleshoot problems fast before they impacted users.

Results:
Kern County choose Fluke Networks' Network Time Machine™ and Fluke Networks' OptiView® XG Network Analysis Tablet to gain insight and speed problem isolation and remediation. Using these solutions, the IT team has increased the visibility they have into network and application performance, and dramatically reduced their troubleshooting time. The team regularly monitors VoIP MOS (mean opinion score) and can instantly isolate and rebuild calls to find problems at a packet level. In addition, they can now continually monitor all other network and application infrastructure components from a single location and when needed, take the OptiView XG tablet into the field for more complex fixes, reducing excessive travel for the team.

Pruitt Communications Case Study for XG

Pruitt Communications Uses Fluke Networks’ OptiView XG Network Analysis Tablet to Verify Network Readiness and Troubleshoot VoIP Deployments for Customers

Challenge:
Pruitt Communications deploys VoIP and unified communications systems for a variety of enterprise, healthcare and government organizations throughout the United States. Key to the process is conducting network assessments to validate the readiness of infrastructure prior to deploying a new system. With the inability to cost-effectively conduct performance testing, Pruitt outsourced these assessments to a specialist, resulting in a loss of service revenue. In addition, following the assessment phase, the company is required to troubleshoot any problems that are uncovered, and once deployed, validate the performance and deliver troubleshooting support services. To accomplish all of this Pruitt used a variety of complex tools that required manual correlations of data, costing the team valuable time and resources.

Results:
After seeing Fluke Networks' OptiView® XG Network Analysis Tablet in action with a partner, the team at Pruitt Communications knew it was the solution they needed. It allows them to bring network assessments in-house and conduct network performance testing to generate and measure traffic flows across the client and service provider networks, validating the support of a VoIP rollout. The OptiView XG also gives the team automated network and application analysis, so as problems emerge they can instantly isolate and remediate an issue. Finally, once deployed the team can quickly provide ongoing troubleshooting and support via remote access capabilities with the tablet.

Chester Zoo XG Case Study

Fluke Networks’ OptiView® XG Helps Chester Zoo IT Staff Ferret Out Network and Application Issues Fast

Challenge:
The network and application infrastructure at Chester Zoo is just as complex and vital to operations as the enclosure environments that house their wildlife. Therefore, when problems arise, IT staff are responsible for quickly isolating and remediating problems, before they impact staff or visitors. Unfortunately, the team's existing tools delivered limited visibility, were extremely complex and difficult to use, and provided no proactive network or application analysis. Whether overcoming a broadcast storm, ensuring performance of a new virtual server environment, or managing response times on server databases, the team often relied on end-user complaints to identify problems. The team was constantly in a reactive, instead of proactive state of network and application analysis. And, when they had to head into the field to fix problems, they relied on a variety of disparate tools, instead of one integrated solution. This lack of visibility made it challenging for the IT department to identify and resolve problems before they significantly impacted zoo operations.

Results:
To meet these network and application analysis challenges, Chester Zoo selected Fluke Networks' OptiView® XG. This dedicated network analysis tablet allows IT staff to proactively monitor for network and application problems, and when issues do emerge, quickly isolate the problem, and if needed, take the tablet into the field for fast remediation before the issue impacts end-users. The team keeps the device plugged into the network all day to monitor and troubleshoot key applications and connections in its 10 Gbps virtual environment. It provides proactive support that helps IT save time and money, and because it is easy to use, the entire team can collaborate on troubleshooting problems.

Challenge:
The Bosch Group has 40 locations throughout its Southwest region in Germany. The sites are networked and supported by seven managers from two different locations. OptiView XG can save your life!, Jun 19, 2014

OptiView XG is the tool you can rely on to get you out of the brown stuff when it comes to solving problems on your network. If someone asks me what’s the one tool you would take with you to solve a network problem, and your life depended on fixing the problem fast, I would choose the OptiView XG. You can plug in anywhere (access, distribution or core). OptiView lets you see what’s in the network and where, so you can find your way around. The dashboards are great at bringing a problem to your attention, rather than having to go look for it. A good example of this is the switch and router health showing FCS or interface errors or discarded packets, so you can solve potential slow network problems before you get user complaints. But for me Path Analysis is worth its weight in gold allowing you to see the Layer 2 / 3 path and any problems in the path, between the client and an application server; proving it is or is not the network.
Pros: Navigator view of whats connected around a device, Network Health on Switches and routers, Layer 2 and 3 Path analysis and viewing end-user response time via TruView. 10GBaseT connection to make throughput and performance tests at 10G.
Cons: Windows XP interface makes it look dated on the start up screen

Swiss Army Knife of Analysis Tools, Jun 19, 2014

As a consultant focused on resolving performance issues, I don't go into a client without the XG. It doesn't matter if the job is a network assessment, troubleshooting an application problem, analyzing a wireless issue, measuring traffic usage, or capturing traffic on 10Gb links, the XG is packed with all the tools I need to find the root cause quickly. The built in tap feature is handy for running a client side capture without needing to configure a SPAN.
Pros: Line-rate packet capture up to 10Gbps SNMP polling and packet capture in one Server performance testing and resource polling Easy to use and configure
Cons: Portable, but can be awkward to hold when performing a wireless survey. The Traffic Analysis area of the tool can take some getting used to.

Pros: remote access customized dashboards consolidated problem log AirMagnet integrataion 1 and 10 Gb fiber ports ability to use pc's for traffic generation new visio maps Microsoft snmp support Clearight packet capture
