Instantly identifies fault domain to network or server

This network packet capture analyzer automatically discovers applications and reports performance trending metrics by server, network and client site. The unique Performance Bottleneck Analysis (PBA) displays server, network and client site time for each TCP flow. PBA metrics show where application time is spent, immediately identifying the root cause of application performance complaints.

Dashboard

In addition, the network packet capture analyzer also shows how related performance metrics change over time, allowing drill down to quickly isolate fault domain to a specific server, or network. The network packet extraction process is integrated with the UI so that the set of flows exhibiting the problem can be quickly analyzed.

Once the relevant packets are extracted, the network packet capture analyzer guides users from application to flow to transaction view using an intuitive drill down process. Bounce charts give a clear indication of how transactions transverse over time and indicate problem packets without going into decode view. The result is increased operational efficiencies through a reduced learning curve, shorter time to domain isolation and quicker root cause resolution.

PBAFluke Networks’ Performance Bottleneck Analysis (PBA) is based on a patent-pending algorithm in which the analyzer isolates the time that a flow spends with the Server, Network and Client. The algorithm requires one measurement point in the network near the end-point, such as the Server or Client. This speeds troubleshooting time as it does not require measurement at two locations to determine change in network latency.

  • The PBA function shows the average time application flows (for example, SMTP and HTTP) spent on server, network and client. Trend graphs indicate a sudden change in time spent on server or network during the analysis period.
  • Once the fault domain is identified, detailed metrics can be used to isolate the root cause. The network packet capture analyzer automatically tracks key performance indicators such as server connections, TCP resets from servers, or retransmissions to understand the exact cause of performance issues.

The NTM uses stream-to-disk technology to record all network traffic up to full 10Gbps line rate so you don’t miss any critical events. All Network Time Machine products come with multiple, high-performance interfaces with multiple platform choices.

Server Detail

The NTM integrates the powerful application-centric analysis engine based on the award-winning ClearSight™ Analyzer (CSA) which provides automatic application analysis. For each application flow, the CSA can automatically construct bounce charts and notes with highlighted text and color codes to indicate application impairments, such as slow TCP sever response, and error status. In addition, CSA supports multi-segment analysis so you can quickly analyze flows that span across multiple tiers of servers or network segments. This powerful capability visually identifies problems in timing, command/response and TCP level impairments such as lost packets or out-of-order sequence. Perform in-depth analysis of the most commonly used applications such as SQL, Oracle, MS Networking (SMB), VoIP, DNS, FTP, HTTP, POP3, Telnet, SMTP, SNMP, MS Exchange, and Citrix. CSA also supports WireShark® decodes, providing visibility into an even wider range of applications.

Auto-multisegment Analysis accelerate distributed packet analysis

The NTM with V9 Software has a Tunnel traffic analysis engine and works with the Remote Agent Manager (RAM) to automate the process to setup, capture, retrieve and merge packets to facilitate automatic multi-segment packet analysis (Auto-MSA).  The RAM can be installed on a Windows based PC running ClearSight Analyzer, or OptiView XG to launch Auto-MSA, facilitating quick inter-network segment problem isolation utilizing multiple Fluke Networks packet capturing solutions.  The RAM is available to download for Gold customers.

Real-time Application Performance Analysis

Performance Bottleneck Analysis

The NTM is application and server aware. The network packet capture analyzer offers a high-level dashboard view of applications, servers and sites. This single screen provides a visual representation of key performance indicators such as data volume by application, network latency by site, and connections by server. While the NTM continuously discovers and logs the performance of each application server, users can easily select and show the KPIs that are of interest with one click, making it easy to compare performance between servers supporting the same application. In addition, users can define thresholds and alarms for analyzed performance metrics. This speeds the detection of recurring problems by proactively monitoring key metrics for the applications of interest:

  • Servers take too long to render data for application transaction
  • Excessive number of connections to a server by application
  • Excessive network latency to a branch office
  • Excessive retransmissions by site or server
Advanced Data Mining (Atlas Option)

Identify with Atlas

A key feature the NTM platform is the ability to quickly identify the packets that are related to the event of interest through the use of an advanced indexing and classification engine. In its heart is a powerful Relational Database Management System (RDMS) which crunches and makes sense of volumes (many terabytes worth) of network data in near real time.
The NTM interface uses the information to create unique views that are critically valuable to assist network engineers and administrators to proactively manage and service their networks. These views are shown in an intuitive workspace where relevant information is easily accessible with a few mouse clicks.
The framework provides an extremely intuitive method of troubleshooting networks, and represents a revolutionary new way to manage and service your network. Four main upper layer application types are supported with detailed analysis: HTTP, H.323, SIP, and RTP. Flow-based information on the Transport and Network Layer are also easily accessible so users can extract the flows or packet of interest for root cause analysis.

Traffic Analysis of Critical Links

Each Network Time Machine (NTM) is equipped with high performance FPGA-based capture card. All capture cards have built-in hardware filters and DLC error detection capabilities. NTM can be connected to the network through SPAN ports or any of the large array of inline, aggregation or switching Taps available from Fluke Networks.  Together with its high performance stream-to-disk functionality - up to 10 Gbps, the NTM provides you with the peace of mind that you will not miss a critical event on your critical links.

  • Suitable for monitoring at critical network consolidation point: load-balancers, data center ingress or egress, Gigabit Ethernet Channel, and core switches.
  • When NTM is connected to multiple links or with multiple NTM’s deployed, it has the ability to synchronize, merge and analyze flow data collected from different locations and provides a multi-segment bounce chart with timing error detection. Root cause issues such as dropped packets or abnormal network latency as packets transverse across the network can be quickly isolated and identified.

  • VoIP traffic that involves a different signal path for signal and voice stream is automatically correlated and displays as a multi-segment bounce chart for quick resolution of dropped packet, latency or connection issues.
VoIP and Video Performance

Identify with Atlas

The NTM provides real-time or post-capture VoIP and video quality assessment with extensive QoS, call type and codec analysis for all SIP or H.323 calls.  Quality parameters including packet loss, jitter, R-value, can be displayed or combined into MOS and R-factor for voice or VQFactor™ for a video stream.  Generate a QoS report for a VoIP call simply by selecting the desired call and clicking the “report” tab.  Call setup problems, such as can’t connect or busy, are shown without the need to decode packets. Playback the call or video to see the actual problem.

Compliance/Security Forensics

Security

High performance stream-to-disk captures packet and payload for long term storage for tracing of abnormal user behavior. Advanced filters aid in the extraction of traffic to see user patterns, a server susceptible to tampering, and compliance and security violations.

ClearSight Analyzer can provide detailed analysis showing where and how the issue occurred. FTP, Messaging, Email, Video or Voice calls can be played back in ClearSight Analyzer to quickly extract evidence required for action.

Fluke Networks’ Network Time Machine Cuts Troubleshooting Time in Half for Voice and Data Telecom Company

Challenge:
VanRan Communications helps customers deploy converged voice and data systems based on AVAYA technology. When problems emerge with voice quality or the stability of a system, engineers need to quickly isolate the issue and identify if the network or hardware is to blame. Unfortunately, this process is time consuming and difficult, often taking months of troubleshooting time with tools like Wireshark. Making matters worse, issues are not always isolated, causing VanRan to redeploy additional resources and hardware in an attempt to fix the problem. To accelerate the troubleshooting process and increase accuracy, VanRan engineers needed a solution that simplified simultaneous data capture and instantly combined data flows so engineers could accurately isolate a problem, prove its source, and fix it fast.

Results:
VanRan selected Fluke Networks Network Time Machine™, an all-in-one packet capture appliance for network and application analysis. With the solution, VanRan engineers have dramatically improved their ability to identify root cause, increasing their success rate from roughly 50 percent to more than 95 percent. Furthermore, engineers have dramatically reduced the amount of time spent finding a problem by approximately 50 percent. The ability to streamline the troubleshooting process has helped increase customer satisfaction and allowed VanRan engineers to get more done in less time.

Kern County Case Study

Kern County in California Uses Fluke Networks’ OptiView XG and Network Time Machine to Troubleshoot and Fix Network and Application Performance Issues

Challenge:
The IT team at Kern County is responsible for providing support services from one central location to all other departments in the county. Like many IT departments, the team often struggles to easily gain insight into network performance and key systems and applications that are vital to county operations. When problems do emerge, the team often hears about them first from end users, and is then forced to use a variety of outdated and complex tools that slow the troubleshooting process to a crawl. With more than 9,000 users the team needed to a) be able to more easily monitor and troubleshoot their VoIP network, and b) have a comprehensive and portable solution that could automate network and application analysis so the team could monitor and troubleshoot problems fast before they impacted users.

Results:
Kern County choose Fluke Networks' Network Time Machine™ and Fluke Networks' OptiView® XG Network Analysis Tablet to gain insight and speed problem isolation and remediation. Using these solutions, the IT team has increased the visibility they have into network and application performance, and dramatically reduced their troubleshooting time. The team regularly monitors VoIP MOS (mean opinion score) and can instantly isolate and rebuild calls to find problems at a packet level. In addition, they can now continually monitor all other network and application infrastructure components from a single location and when needed, take the OptiView XG tablet into the field for more complex fixes, reducing excessive travel for the team.

Toll Authority Case Study

Major Roadway Authority Uses Network Time Machine for PCI Compliance and Application Performance

Challenge:
The Authority was migrating to a 10G network and did not have analyzers in place that could support high bandwidth. In addition, because of the large number of payment transactions processes, the Authority needed a solution not only capable of monitoring application performance, but that could also aid in reaching and maintaining PCI compliance.

Results:
The Authority has now made the transition to 10G and is able to quickly and easily resolve application performance issues by getting to the root cause of problems. Furthermore, the Authority is now PCI-DSS compliant.

WILLCOM

WILLCOM, is the only service provider of PHS, called "AIR-EDGE", in Japan.  They offer wireless data communication and VoIP services through its independent network with approximately 160,000 PHS cell stations across Japan.  The key feature of the service is that users can enjoy up to 800kbps of stable data communication service with only a small fixed charge of JPY3, 880 ($40) per month.

In order to provide reliable and excellent service all-the-time across the country, WILLCOM deployed the Network Time Machine Portable to conduct data analysis and performance verification to ensure smooth service delivery during network expansion.  When service problem occurs, the NTM's forensic analysis is used for back-in-time analysis to get to root cause quickly.

Access to live 24 x7 technical support - Gold Support includes direct, immediate telephone access to our world-class Technical Assistance Center (TAC), access only available to Gold Members.  Our centers in Seattle, WA and Eindhoven, NL employ a full staff of highly trained technical experts that are on call, including weekends and through the night when most network changes are implemented, to answer complex troubleshooting questions interpret results and help you get the most out of your Network Time Machine.

Hardware Repair - If your Network Time Machine mainframe needs repair it will be done free-of-charge. The unit will receive priority service free-of-charge at the nearest service depot for the Network Time Machine, (Tokyo, Beijing, Eindhoven or Seattle).  In some countries, on-site repair for the Network Time Machine EX4, Standard 3 and Premium is available to customers with the Gold Support program (see list of countries).  *Gold Support for the Network Time Machine does not currently include a loaner unit during repair service.

Access to our Knowledge Base - You’ll have an open door to valuable information we’ve gathered from helping customers over the years, content only available to Gold Support Program members.  It also includes helpful technical articles written by our experts.

Member Only promotions - Your membership qualifies you for “Members Only” promotions and programs. This includes product discounts, access to reconditioned equipment at special prices and other special values.

Gold Support for NTM and VPM rack mount units (which includes software updates, onsite repair services and TAC support) is available for up to 5 years from the date of original equipment purchase. Server hardware must be upgraded at least every 5 years to maintain Gold support eligibility. Fluke Networks guarantees software backward compatibility with rack mount NTM and VPM appliances for three years after the original purchase date.  Beyond the third year we will maintain compatibility if the hardware platform allows, although due to the high-performance nature of our solutions Fluke Networks recommends customers to upgrade their servers every 3 years for optimal performance.
